I reached Hamburg at 09:28 after taking the night train from Stockholm to Hamburg. Arrival, luggage storage, and check-in
The five-minute walk from Hamburg Hbf was easy with my large backpack, and the hostel was straightforward to find because it occupies a tall brick building. I arrived shortly after 09:28, more than five hours before check-in. Reception could not check me in until 15:00, but self-service luggage lockers were available inside the hostel.
I chose a small locker for six hours. It cost €2 and, despite the name, my entire large backpack fitted inside. The machine was easy to use. After checkout the following morning, I paid another €2 for the same locker size so I could explore without my backpack before catching the 22:11 train to Zürich.
At 15:00, check-in at reception was fast and straightforward. The staff were friendly. My key card opened the correct room, although the team noticed at checkout that I had somehow been registered against a different room in their system. They fixed it themselves without asking me to do anything.
Inside my four-person mixed dorm
The dorm was larger than I expected. It had four modern bunks, coat hooks, key-card access, and an ensuite toilet and shower. I had a lower bunk and was lucky: only one of the other three beds was occupied, so the room never felt crowded.
The mattress and pillow were comfortable, and the lower bunk had enough height for me to sit up and move around. A pillow and blanket were provided, but I had to make the bed myself. Each bunk had a privacy curtain, reading light, small shelf, USB connection, and power outlet.
Each guest also had a large metal locker beneath the bed. Mine was big enough for my full backpack, but it required my own padlock. This is different from the paid lockers in the lobby, which I used before check-in and after checkout.
Bathrooms and cleanliness
The bed, dorm, toilet, and shower were all very clean when I arrived. The ensuite bathroom was extremely compact and looked like a small bathroom unit fitted into an older room, but it was enough for a short stay.
My roommate used the ensuite shower first in the morning, so I tried one of the shared showers in the hallway instead. It was clean, had good water pressure, and worked without any problems. A towel was not included with my dorm bed; the hostel information board advertised towel rental for €5 during my stay.
How well did I sleep?
I slept well and would rate the night 8/10. Having only one roommate meant there was little movement in the dorm. The room became slightly warm because the ventilation was weak, but the temperature did not bother me. My roommate opened the window; I was farther away and did not notice much difference.
Street noise was noticeable with the window open, but the room became quiet when we closed it. Nothing disturbed me during the night, and I did not even need the earplugs or sleep mask I had packed for the trip.
Wi-Fi, workspace, and social atmosphere
Generator Hamburg is enormous, with six floors and an elevator that made reaching my room easy with a large backpack. The ground-floor social area was also much bigger than I expected, with sofas, tables, plenty of seating, and easy access to power outlets.
I had fallen behind on work during the first busy days of the journey, so I used the lobby before check-in and again after checking out at 10:00. The free Wi-Fi was fast enough for everything I needed, and finding a socket was easy. Being allowed to remain in the common area until my evening train added real value to a one-night booking.
I mostly worked and did not socialise myself, but the hostel clearly made meeting people easy. I saw groups forming and overheard travellers who had only just met. There was a large bar and games area, and the posted weekly programme advertised events such as quiz night, beer pong, karaoke, language exchange, parties, and Sunday game night. I did not use the bar or attend an event, so I cannot review those personally.

Location and the area around Hamburg Hbf
The location was the hostel’s biggest strength for my Interrail trip. I could walk from the platform area to the hostel in about five minutes, leave my backpack, and return easily for the next train. I felt safe inside the hostel.
My personal impression of the streets immediately around the station was less comfortable. There were always many people moving through the area, and I did not experience a problem, but I preferred knowing which direction I was walking instead of standing around with my luggage and looking lost. Once I moved away from the station, Hamburg felt cleaner, calmer, and much more attractive than my first impression suggested.
